Reflecting on a Transformational Trip to the Far East – by Mel Pipe
Last month, Lee and I (Mel) embarked on a journey that not only took us thousands of miles away from home but also transported us into a world of vibrant cultures, deep business connections, and unforgettable experiences. Our destination? Hong Kong & China. And what awaited us was a whirlwind of meetings, negotiations, and moments of pure adventure.
Thursday 21st March – Friday 22nd March: The Beginning
The anticipation was palpable as we made our way to the airport on Thursday afternoon. Arriving in Hong Kong late on Friday night, the feeling of being 4,000 miles from home hit us with full force.
Saturday 23rd March: Diving into Business
Despite the jet lag, Saturday kicked off with a meeting with Michael from MT. Although language barriers posed a challenge, we delved into discussions about increasing bookings. However, without competitive rates, the prospects seemed limited. Yet, the day ended on a high note with a delightful dinner at La Tosca, offering not just Italian cuisine but also breathtaking views of Hong Kong.
Sunday 24th March: Racing and Crossing Borders
With a spare day on our hands, Lee convinced me to experience horse racing at Sha Tin. Despite not being seasoned bettors, we soaked in the atmosphere and even witnessed a thrilling race. Later, we crossed into Shenzhen, navigating through immigration queries. Dinner at the hotel capped off the day.
Monday 25th March: Into the Heart of Business
The real work began as we met with various industry players. From Shenzhen Worldcargo to Proair and UTrust, discussions revolved around market strategies and potential collaborations. Each meeting provided insights into the dynamics of the industry and the ambitions of our counterparts.
Tuesday 26th March: MRF Days
A pivotal moment arrived as we engaged with MRF, our key partners in China. The professionalism and warmth extended to us were remarkable, setting the tone for fruitful discussions. From office tours to presentations, the day was filled with insights and aspirations for future collaborations. And of course, a visit to the Ping An Finance Centre added a touch of awe to the day’s proceedings.
Wednesday 27th March: Balancing Work and Play
As our time in Shenzhen neared its end, we struck a perfect balance between work and leisure. From indulging in gourmet steaks to arcade games and beach strolls, every moment was cherished. Evenings were filled with live music and camaraderie, showcasing the warmth and hospitality of our hosts.
Thursday 28th March: Wrapping Up
Despite the fatigue creeping in, our final day was filled with meetings with Hunicorn and Lone Rider, potential partners whose enthusiasm for collaboration was evident. As we bid farewell and made our way to the airport, reflections on the trip flooded our minds.
Friday 29th March: Homeward Bound
The journey back home was uneventful, yet the memories of the trip lingered. With exhaustion setting in, we finally arrived home, grateful for the experiences and connections forged during our time in China.

Reflecting on the trip, it’s clear that our industry thrives on relationships and collaborations. From the bustling streets of Hong Kong to the tranquil offices of MRF, every encounter left a lasting impression. The balance between work and play was struck perfectly, allowing us to delve deep into business discussions while also experiencing the richness of Chinese culture.
